Hempstead Schools Get Second Highest Rating by TEA

Two of four campuses at Hempstead ISD have earned the second highest rating by TEA while the other two campuses met acceptable standards.

Last year at this time the Hempstead Independent School District had received an acceptable rating by TEA. The high school received an unacceptable rating while the middle school, elementary and early childhood campuses each received acceptable ratings. This year however, three campuses have moved up one rating and for the first time in the history of the Hempstead ISD the District has campuses receiving recognized status.

Hempstead 's elementary school and early childhood campus each earned recognized status according to official data release by the Texas Education Agency on Friday, August 1. “I am so proud of our students and I want to thank all the parents for their continued support,” said Joy Toney, elementary principal. “We have a wonderful staff who worked very hard this past year and I am so excited about the future at Hempstead Elementary.”

The Hempstead Independent School District , along with the high school and middle school campuses, have been ranked as acceptable by state standards in accordance with the Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS).

“Surrounded by an environment of rising academic standards and state mandates, students, teachers, administrators, support staff, parents and members of the community have worked hard this year to increase the student success rate in the District,” said Gene Glover , superintendent.

The accountability ratings for school districts and campuses in the state have been set as Exemplary, Recognized, Acceptable, and Unacceptable with Exemplary being the highest rating. The ratings are based on TAKS test results for students in grades 3-11 and the passing rate for each sub-group of African Americans, Hispanics, and Whites. Economically Disadvantaged students also have to meet the same standards as for all students.

“We are very proud of the progress that has been made at Hempstead ISD and wanted to share the news with our community as soon as possible,” said Glover. “Through teamwork, we are working hard to change the perception others have of Hempstead .”

esults from the state mandated TAKS test showed improvement across the district. If students at HISD continue to progress as they have; the District should have no problem meeting their goal to be an exemplary district by 2010.
